VICE Talks Film: Kathryn Bigelow & Matthew Heineman on 'Cartel Land'
Cartel Land is a riveting, on-the-ground documentary following parallel stories of US and Mexican vigilantes fighting back against the ruthless drug cartels on either side of the border. It's an excellent documentary, and VICE has teamed with distributors The Orchard to help promote it nationwide. For this episode of VICE Talks Film, Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty, The Hurt Locker)—who recently signed on as an executive producer of the film—sat down with filmmaker Matthew Heineman to discuss his fearless process in capturing this harrowing story and the ever-evolving world of the cartel's stranglehold on communities north and south of the border. Rose McGowan on Sexism in Hollywood & Life After Grindhouse
Subscribe here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-BROADLY Rose McGowan ascended to fame in the late 90s following bombshell roles in edgy horror films like The Doom Generation and Scream and in grindhouse releases like Planet Terror. While she's perhaps best known for her relationship with Marilyn Manson--which resulted in nearly naked red carpet appearances and other media drama--the actress's career has spanned over 20 years and earned her parts in dynamic projects. But after an accident made her realize she was tired and disturbed by her status as a sex symbol, McGowan took a hiatus from Hollywood. Now back on set as a director, she's calling out the sexism she endured as a young woman in Hollywood and is finally taking her creativity into her own hands. Kate Nash on Feminism & the Female Wayne's World
Subscribe Now: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-BROADLY A singer, songwriter, activist, and outspoken feminist, Kate Nash is a woman with a cause. Mixing punk lyrics with a style that is by turns pop, indie, and somewhere in the nebulous realm of the alternative, the English artist uses music and the internet to encourage women around the world to speak up about whatever they can and want. Empowered by the riot grrrl movement of the 90s, she's maintained an original, DIY ethos throughout her career, founding an all-girl after-school music program in the UK and releasing an album on her own label. Most recently, Nash launched the "female Wayne's World"--an online channel called Girl Gang TV. Produced in Nash's garage with the goal of making cool shit that everyone could get involved with, Girl Gang TV is an outlet for connecting with fans and creators online. In this episode of Broadly Meets, host JD Samson talks with Nash about the project, as well as about acne, the importance (or not) of being relatable, MySpace, and how women are making an impact in 2015. Margaret Cho on Power Bottoms and Surviving Bullshit
Subscribe here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-BROADLY Margaret Cho is a no-bullshit comedian, actress, producer and author known for tackling the politics of gender, sexuality, and race with razor sharp wit. Early in her career, Cho starred in the 1994 sitcom All American Girl on ABC. But after network executives criticized her appearance—asking her to lose weight and tone herself down—the actress decided to part ways from the show. While Cho has struggled with an eating disorder and addiction in the past, she's since channelled these experiences into her performances. Before it was trendy Cho was, and remains, an unabashed feminist. As a Korean-American and an openly bisexual entertainer, Cho uses her stand-up and one-woman shows as a platform to discuss her personal life and politics, bringing honesty and activism to the stage. In the past decade, she has produced a Broadway show, launched multiple national tours, and sold out rooms around the country. On stage and off she's been a perpetual voice to marginalized communities and her next show, There Is No I In Team But There Is A Cho In Psycho, is no exception.
